Do public kindergarten classes teach the letter J with or without the top-stroke?

Posted on March 24th, 2010 by admin

I am helping my son learn to write his alphabet. I noticed that some of his preschool lessons teach the uppercase "J" with the horizontal stroke across the top, and some without. Is there a current standard in public kindergarten regarding the "J" with or without the top stroke?

You can teach it to him with the top stroke, but also explain to him that it can also be written without it and still be the same letter. If he writes it with the stroke in kindergarten, as long as he can also recognize the letter without, I doubt it’s going to be confused with any other letter, so it should be alright.

Teaching the solar system in Kindergarten?

Posted on March 15th, 2010 by admin

I have a 2nd interview for a kindergarten teaching position in an amazing little town and I really, really want the job. The principal has requested that I do a 10 minute lesson with their current Kindergarten class. It has to be about the solar system but it can be about anything I’d like, a planet, commets, anything. I need to have an AMAZING and short lesson planned. Have any ideas? Thanks!

why lesson planning is important for kindergarten teacher?

Posted on March 9th, 2010 by admin

How come that most experienced kindergarten teachers plan their activities
to reach PESTALOZZI’s, FROEBEL’s, AND MONTESSORI’s aims of carefully
encouraging the children’s self-understanding through play activities and skills organized
constructively through story telling, games, working with simple
manual materials, and group activities such as singing and dancing and celebrating a child’s
birthday of a national holiday. Because they know that children need to experience LIFE
by living together in a social group, to develop habits of cooperation -so children need to
know the rules. Experienced kindergarten teachers know : All these targets
cannot be reached by off-the-cuff-work.

POWER POINT LESSONS FOR KINDERGARTEN KIDS?

Posted on February 11th, 2010 by admin

Im looking for a website where i can download free PPT for kindergarten kids…i use an LCD screen so PPT’s will be great …if you can also refer me some ppt with audio i will really appreciated it..

thank you

There are several sites that have some good material - a few are public school sites and the PPTs address the specific state’s learning standards.

Making your own Powerpoints is actually very easy and you can customize them as needed - the interactive features are great for individual time as well as large group. If you can find a class or workshop that teaches PPT for educators - that would be great and very, very helpful for you to make your class exciting for the kids.

Sites with ready-made presentations:

What is a good idea for a kindergarten math lesson?

Posted on December 19th, 2009 by admin

I am having to teach a math lesson following kindergarten curriculum. I have had a few ideas, however, it is for a college class math project, which means I will be teachin a room full of college kids. Have any ideas or examples of a kindergarten math lesson? Time limit is 10-15 minutes and I must have manipulatives….Please give serious suggestions.

YOU SHOULD PROBABLY DO SIMPLE MATH LIKE 1, 2, 3, 4… OR MAYBE EVEN 1 +1 EQUALS 2. THAT’S THE MOST KINDERGARTEN YOU CAN GET.

Kindergarten Science Lessons??!?

Posted on December 9th, 2009 by admin

I need two types of science lessons. One that can be fit into a regular science time period and the other that is integrated into language arts. Has anyone had any successful lessons??

I do a fun lesson about force. I have toy cars and we first start by sitting in a circle and I tell the kids I am going to get the car moving. Then I look at the car and say, "Move. Come on, move, pleeeease, moooooove!" Then someone inevitably says "You need to PUSH it!" We talk about that we need to start something in motion by pushing or pulling. Then I have them partner up and they try different ways of moving the car. They use a straw to blow it, a string to pull it, etc. They LOVE this lesson.

To integrate language arts you could have the kids draw a picture of their favorite way they got the car moving and write a sentence about it, then make it into a class book.

unit lesson plan using math and reading for kindergarten?

Posted on November 17th, 2009 by admin

I am writing a Unit plan for 2 weeks using math and reading. I am looking for a book that helps Kindergartners in math. Any ideas for books that I could look into using in my lesson? Im doing this for a class so any ideas would be helpful!!
THANKS

I am a Kindergarten teacher and I can tell you some of the things that they need to know in kindergarten to be successful. As far as a specific book, there are so many choices that it would be hard to say use this particular book. In kindergarten one of the most important things they learn in math is reading and writing their numbers (in CA it is 1-30). We also focus on patterns, AB, ABB, ABA…the names of shapes and solid shapes and to describe them (ex. a circle is a circle because it is round and flat)…name the days of the week in order…tell time to the hour…add and subtract numbers 1-10…and many more.

My daughter is 5. I need to know which grade she should be in. I am from India and we do not have grades here.

Hence it makes it difficult to find lesson plans online as everything is gradewise. I feel that even kindergarten lesson plans are a little high for her.
Please let me know asap.

5 yrs old…that usually kindergarten…depending on how late in the year her birthday is. If she’s a Sept thru Dec. baby, then she may also be considered 1st grade. I would start with Kindergarten level first and then work up from there to 1st grade based on her ability

Is there free online kindergarten science lesson activities?
