What do you think are best focuses in guitar lessons?

Posted on December 17th, 2011 by admin

Just curious. Anyone give guitar lessons, and do you focus on learning how to read the notations for your lessons, do you think it is essential to learn (reading musical notation besides guitar tabs)?

Thanks.

learn the tabs first. its helps :D

When taking guitar lessons are the basics the same for acoustic and bass?

Posted on November 21st, 2011 by admin

My husband and I want to learn guitar, I want to learn acoustic and he wants to learn the bass. Would we be able to take lessons together? Or is it two totally separate lessons?

Actually they’re not really the same much at all. Both are stringed instruments and the typical tuning on a 4 string bass is E A D G, which is the same as the 4 lowest strings on the guitar in standard tuning (E A D G B E). That’s pretty much where the similarity ends.

Guitar is typically played using a pick or finger picking where the thumb hits the bass notes and the fingers alternately pick the treble notes. Bass is generally plucked using the index and middle fingers to pluck upward on the strings. Guitar music is generally written in treble clef (if you take lessons you’ll learn to read treble clef), while bass music is written in bass clef. Bass is primarily a rhythm instrument while guitar can provide both rhythm and lead/melody. You’ll spend a lot of time learning chords on the guitar and that is not really that applicable to the bass, where you’d typically pluck individual notes.

As a guitar and bass teacher, I really wouldn’t advise trying to teach/learn them both together. They’re really not that similar.

what is a good rate to pay for guitar lessons?

Say if it’s from some one who just wants to make few extra bucks. What would be a good rate to pay. The lessons wouldn’t be given by a professional guitar teacher.

$20 / hour

How to convince my parents to get me guitar lessons?

Posted on August 20th, 2011 by admin

2 years ago i got an acoustic guitar for christmas. Ive been asking my parents for lessons since then. Ive even offered to pay for half of the lessons.

Learning how to make music is a great way to exercise parts of your brain you don’t usually use. I also found this article with great persuasive points for your argument:

Good luck!

How much do you think guitar lessons are worth?

Posted on July 27th, 2011 by admin

I am an advanced guitarist of 11 years and have taught multiple people how to play the guitar and have been payed for the lessons I gave. (40$ a month) once or twice weekly per person. Is that fair? Unfair?
As a side note: in my opinion I am an excellent musician and a great teacher, and I have been told that by everyone I have taught. So accordingly, rate the price of my guitar lessons based on any given teacher with advanced musical knowledge :)
You are undercharging. The going rates are usually between $15 and $50 per half hour depending on how good you are and what you feel comfortable charging. I don’t do lessons for less than $20 per half hour and most of my students are at $25. Also, change your price based on where you teach the lessons, if the student comes to you charge less, if you go to them charge more.

I know it depends on where you go, but what is the usual cost for guitar lessons for 30 minutes?

I might take them for $25 for a half an hour. Is that a good deal?

Does guitar lessons teach you how to play guitar better? Or just teaches you the chords and stuff?

Posted on July 19th, 2011 by admin

I have a guitar and I know how to play because I search tabs on google and I can search chords. Does guitar lessons help you? How?

A good teacher will teach you how to read music, know the notes and understand the fretboard, understand basic music theory (scales and chord theory), and make you a much better all-around guitarist than if you just go online and copy what you see on tabs and chord charts. Anybody can look at a picture of a guitar neck, figure out where to put their fingers, and strum their hand up and down against the strings with enough practice. A guitar teacher will actually teach you music and how to create it with the guitar as your instrument. When you can pick a key, understand the chord progressions and scales and modes in that key and play anything you want, then you’ll know you’re a good guitarist. That’s hard to do without lessons (not impossible, but hard).
